As part of a pilot project run by the Department of Education and the Centre for School Leadership (CSL), Ballinamore Community School, Scoil Chlann Naofa(Primary) and St Caillins(Primary), supported by PDST, formed a Professional Learning Community to work on an 18 month project. The schools involved will give a short presentation on their project to date*. This will then be followed by a CPD session on the teaching of fractions for primary & post primary teachers facilitated by PDST STEM advisor Dennis Mulligan. This session will demonstrate the value of concrete materials in fractions to support the line of development towards a conceptual understanding of the area that is relevant to both settings.
*The group have implemented a number of strategies to date including the following: attendance at a common CPD event in numeracy for 6th class and post primary maths teachers, facilitated via sustained support by PDST advisor Dennis Mulligan, exchange of samples of work in Maths and English between the 6th class and 1st year teachers, along with developing a transition booklet for 6th class students.
