** POSTPONED ** - English as an additional language (EAL) workshop for Primary and Post Primary - 20LC-SP35

This two hour workshop will focus on language learning with particular reference to EAL and the new Primary Language Curriculum.

Dr Deirdre Kirwan will share participants' concerns in relation to the contexts in which they are working and share any approaches they have used that they found beneficial. Dr Deirdre Kirwan will put forward ideas, approaches, suggestions as what in her experience, and the experience of colleagues, gets pupils interested and motivated. How the approach taken to EAL can benefit ALL pupils in their language learning and, as a consequence, their learning in general. Issues of teacher role, pupil identity, social cohesion, and an integrated approach to language learning will also be highlighted as important aspects of education.

Facilitator: Dr Dierdre Kirwan former principal of Scoil Bhrídehas co-authored a book with David Little that describes the integrated approach taken to the education of pupils who have come from a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds (more than 50 languages in a school of 322 pupils). The title of the book (and link) is:

Little, D. and D. Kirwan  (2019) Engaging with Linguistic  Diversity: A Study of Educational Inclusion in an Irish Primary School. Bloomsbury Academic.
