“That’s so gay”: Homophobic and Transphobic Bullying in Primary Schools

In the primary school context, teachers and principals are familiar with the taunting that can happen in the school environs which relates to homophobia and transphobia. The Department of Education’s Anti-bullying Policy and Procedures (2013) mandates schools to tackle this type of bullying, however schools may wish to reflect on how this can be done in an age-appropriate and consistent manner encompassing all aspects of school organisation.

This webinar will:

  • Explore some of the research in the area
  • Outline recent trends in education in relation to homophobic and transphobic bullying
  • Provide classroom materials for use in upper primary classrooms as well as ideas which can be used in more junior classes.
  • While the materials are grounded in the SPHE curriculum, this work informs many aspects of school life where children are potential victims of bullying.

Dr. Bernie Collins who will facilitate the session is co-author of ‘All Together Now’, a programme which focuses on anti-LGBTI+ bullying in primary schools. She has also published manuals for primary school teachers in other areas, including children’s voice and gender equality.
