Barriers to Literacy Acquisition focusing on ADHD,ASD,APD & GAD - 21LCAU38

This presentation will introduce barriers to literacy acquisition. It will explain how the conditions experienced by some children can impede early acquisition of literacy. The presentation will show the type of interventions that are successful and the type of scaffolding that children may receive to help them progress to as normal a scholastic pathway as possible.

  • Speech, Language and Communication Disorders (Developmental Language Disorder)
  • Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • General Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

This presentation focuses on the above conditions from the point of view of how teachers can recognise them and the types of intervention which give children successful access to the full curriculum.

Presenter: Dr Pauline Cogan (Educational Psychologist and creator of TEST 2R)

Dr Pauline Cogan is a former Irish Primary (Elementary) School Teacher who has had a life-long interest in literacy and literacy acquisition difficulties. She has taught, lectured and pursued studies in various parts of the world in education, special education, linguistics, psychology and neurology. She holds an M Sc in Neurology and Linguistics from VUB, Brussels and a Ph D, in Psychology through Science, from Trinity College Dublin. Pauline has developed TEST2r which is an early screening, diagnostic and intervention tool and is intended for use by primary school teachers and resource teachers to help them identify and provide interventions to those children who may be at risk of literacy acquisition difficulties (5 & 6-year olds).
