We are running two separate 3-day Safety Representative Training courses for School Staff. This is Course 1 with dates listed below.
- Tuesday 17th September - Day 1
- Tuesday 1st October - Day 2
- Tuesday 8th October - Day 3
Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 the employer must encourage employees to nominate a Safety Representative(s) for their work areas.
This 3-day training should be provided for the Safety Representatives that are nominated by their peers, to ensure they are competent for their functions. The Safety Representatives function is mainly communication based but can include tasks such as completing safety audits, accompanying Health and Safety Authority (HSA) Inspectors and completing accident investigations, once agreed with management.
The focus during this training will be on school related occupational health and safety. The Guidelines on Managing Safety, Health and Welfare in Primary Schools and the revised Guidelines on Managing Safety, Health and Welfare in Post-Primary Schools and resources available to schools via the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) website will be used throughout to ensure attendees gain familiarity with the resources available to them and the requirements therein.

- Accidents and incidents: causes, prevention, reporting & recording of accidents & dangerous occurrences,
- Emergency planning,
- Communication, consultation and training requirements,
- Management of hazardous materials – chemical, biological, etc- ref safety data sheets (SDS),
- Work environments, work practices, effects of intoxicants, psychosocial hazards etc.,
- Safety signs in the workplace,
- Ongoing OHS tasks - evacuation drills, emergency equipment checks, lifting equipment inspections, accident investigations and reporting, OHS meetings etc.,
- Health & Safety Audits including preparation of a OHS audit checklist,
- Promotion of Occupational HS work practices in relation to oneself, others and the workplace,
- Sources of information,
- Quiz
The training involves practical exercises and referencing of guidance, safety systems, safety statements and risk assessments throughout.
Practical exercises can include:
- Completion of hazard identification and risk assessments,
- Reviewing of Safety Data Sheets for typical chemicals that may be used in a school environment,
- Preparation of meeting agenda for a OHS meeting,
- Accident investigation,
- Preparation of a OHS audit checklist for the school areas,
- Carrying out an audit of the work area using the checklist developed and recording their findings and recommendations ready to present to management at the next OHS meeting,
- Completion of accident investigation and report forms.
