Topic - Science of Reading - An Introduction.
The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading helps us to understand how proficient reading and writing develop; why some students have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties.
In this session we will discuss the science of reading using two models of reading. We will look at the five pillars which underpin the science of reading research, namely: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. We will examine how a focus on these pillars can help us to effectively assess and teach students to ultimately improve reading outcomes.
