The Flipped Classroom is a pedagogical approach in which traditional, class-based learning is inverted, so that students are introduced to learning material before class. Classroom time is then used to deepen understanding through discussion with peers and problem-solving activities facilitated by teachers.
In traditional learning, students acquire knowledge in a classroom setting and are then sent home to synthesise, evaluate and analyse this knowledge after class. With a Flipped Classroom approach, students acquire knowledge before class and use class time to deepen learning and develop higher order cognitive skills. They will do so by practicing and applying concepts and ideas through interaction with classmates and their teacher. After the class, students reflect further on feedback from peers and their teacher and use this to deepen their learning.
One of the objectives of the flipped classroom approach is to move students from passive learners to a more constructive pedagogical orientation, where they engage in collaborative learning, peer learning and problem-based learning.
These innovative and hands on workshops, which take place over two consecutive weeks (1.5 hours per session), will:
- Explore ways to ethically source and create digital content to support and deepen student learning
- Support teachers to plan for, create, store and disseminate effective instructional videos
- Explore how the use of formative assessment is integral to the successful implementation of the flipped classroom model
- Consider the potential of the flipped classroom approach to facilitate the development of students’ key skills and support differentiation and personalised learning.
- Facilitate teachers to reflect on current practice and identify how to incorporate the use of the flipped classroom model to make more effective use of class time.
This model of teaching and learning is highly conducive to eLearning.
