This course will explore creative methodologies and approaches to teaching traditional music elements of the Senior Cycle curriculum, including tune types, instruments, the song tradition, and Irish music essays.  An awareness of how best to differentiate lessons to appeal to students who play traditional Irish music will be discussed in order to encourage their musical literacy and harness their potential in the classroom. Strategies will be discussed to utilise research skills students have developed during Junior cycle in their study of Irish Traditional Music.

Teachers will have developed creative methodologies and approaches to teach traditional music elements of the Senior Cycle curriculum, including tune types, instruments, the song tradition, and Irish music essays.

Course participants will be able to differentiate lessons to appeal to students who play traditional Irish music to encourage their musical literacy.

Course participants will be able to design interesting lessons to harness the potential of students who play traditional Irish music and to help them achieve.

Course participants will be able to utilise students’ creative skills developed during Junior Cycle to expand their exploration of traditional Irish Music in the classroom. will have developed creative methodologies and approaches to teach traditional music elements of the Senior Cycle curriculum, including tune types, instruments, the song tradition, and Irish music essays

Bio - Dulra Hanley is a traditional musician and second-level music teacher hailing from County Sligo. She undertook both her B.A. (Music & Nua-Ghaeilge) and her PME in Maynooth University. Dúlra has been trained in both classical and traditional music. She is greatly interested in the intersection of these two styles. She recently has been involved in the establishment of Geantraí an Iarthair, a cross-border traditional orchestra. She has competed to a high level in All-Ireland Fleadhanna Ceoil and has performed for Prince Charles and Pope Francis on their respective visits to Ireland. In 2016, she toured Ireland as part of Macalla 1916 with The National Folk Orchestra, with whom she performs regularly. Dúlra has taught the fiddle and mentored grúpaí ceoil with Comhaltas Branches for several years. She is an avid Gaeilgeoir, currently teaching in a Gaelcholáiste.
