A Thematic Approach to teaching Local History:
History is concerned with studying the political, cultural, social and economic structures of the past; it is not about memorising facts or the ability to recite dates. More importantly, it analyses trends and asks, why did these events happen in this particular way? Exploring the hidden histories of County Longford, learning can be fun whilst active. A key feature of this course is its exploration of the Longford countryside introducing you to a series of local tours which you can bring your own pupils on. If interested in Local History and learning more about County Longford then this is the course for you.

Day 3 - Lanesborough & Lough Ree - Our plan is to take a trip to Lough Ree from Lanesborough to Inis Cleraun (Quaker Island). Quaker Island is steeped in legend as well as political and church history. We will land on the Island weather permitting to view the sites. Wear suitable boots or wellingtons as you may get your shoes wet.
Day 4 - Royal Canal - We will have a walking tour of Longford Town in the area connected to the Royal Canal from Harbour Row to Longford Slashers. We will travel from there to Killashee junction by car. Then we will drive to Clondra and see the harbour and where the Canal joins the Shannon
Day 5 - Longford Town - We will meet Shane Crossan, Film Maker and Assistant Arts Officer of Longford County Council. He will inform us about the various resources available online on the history and landscape of Co. Longford.
